The admins of well-made servers such as Lifeboat play the role of dungeon master to hundreds, even thousands of players on a daily basis, where friendships are forged, alliances formed, and adventures created. My brief adventures on Lifeboat transformed me from an old, skeptical fogey wondering what the kids were on about into a believer in the potential and power of Minecraft. Now I want to know what was at the heart of that temple. Sure, I had played the boxed-in adventures before, but the community has been honing their adventure-creation techniques for years now, far beyond the packaged experience. Though we didn’t get to explore the entire temple, I was given a brief taste of the possibilities for puzzling and exploration that I never quite grasped playing solo. We were then sent to another segment of the Lifeboat server, an adventure game called Temple of the Gods, where we spent a brief period of time exploring a labyrinthine temple, collecting treasure, and helping one another cross platforming (or parkour) challenges.

Another time, another player and I jumped at each other for several seconds instead of actually swinging our swords and fighting. At one point I was offered a pumpkin in exchange for leaving an enemy player alone. The variety in the environment and chest contents made for some goofy scenarios as we all stumbled along, vying for gold swords and wildly swinging at one another. Again, I was introduced almost immediately to what makes Minecraft so exciting for people to play together and stream for one another. And I could play with all these other people at the same time right here? The mere act of jumping around the map like an idiot with everyone else completely and immediately transformed the experience. I know that may sound like a no-brainer if you’ve played a ton of Minecraft before, but when you only play alone for so long, just seeing another person you can positively interact with is an exciting discovery on its own.
